The Burloak Canoe Club was founded in 1989 by the merger of the Mohawk and Oakville Canoe Clubs. The Oakville Canoe Club was founded in 1974 by former Olympian (1956) Bill Collins. In June 1974, the club, competing for the very first time, finished first in the Women's war Canoe race at the Boulevard Club. The rest is history! The Burloak Canoe Club is a 125 member club open to the public without restrictions, which attracts individuals from eight to eighty mainly from the Burlington/Oakville area. Our "Canoe Kids" program is run in conjunction with the Town of Oakville and gives boys and girls the chance to have fun and acquire the skills to safely enjoy the water. Once learning the basics in "Canoe Kids" young athletes join Burloak’s Elementary, Development and High Performance training groups. These athletes train year round to compete at Divisional, Provincial and National competitions. High performance athletes have won the Canadian Canoe Association Championship three times in the past five years. In recent years we have expanded our programs to include other forms of paddling. We also offer a Dragonboat Program and Recreational Canoe Trips. At the other end of the spectrum is our "Masters" program for adults over 25, devoted to their fitness and well-being while developing their expertise in paddling. Burloak Masters won the 2002 CanMas competition. |
