Burloak Canoe Club members won seven medals in the Mazda Knockout

The Burloak Canoe Club had the strongest showing at the third annual Mazda Canada Knockout Event at Ontario Place on September 12, 2009. Over 8 countries competed with a strong representation from Canadian Clubs.

The event has more importance now that the IOC recently announced 200 metre distance as the new distance at the London Olympics in 2012. This should create a whole new field of athletes who made their first presence known at the Mazda Knockout.

CKC and Mazda Canada have led the way in promoting the appeal of the 200 metre event through the Mazda Canoe & Kayak Knockout event, which features 200 meter sprint races exclusively.

The objective was to create an event that puts a new look on the sport, creates more energy for the spectator and the athlete hopefully capturing somewhat of a festive atmosphere. The ICF and several other countries are very interested in developing similar events in their country as a result of the success of the Mazda Knockout. The vision is to create a World class circuit for the Knockout format. This is more likely now that 200 meter sprints are Olympic events.

The regatta included a full slate of senior and junior races, war canoes, crew boats and women's canoe over the 200 meter distance.

Burloak Canoe Club won seven medals for the strongest representation of any Club in Canada. The medal winners were Adam VAN KOEVERDEN who placed 3rd in the SENIOR Men K-1 and 2nd in the K-4 with Brady REARDON. Mark OLDERSHAW won two golds, a gold in the OPEN Men IC-4, silver in the SENIOR Men C-1 and he steered the Mixed War Canoe to gold.
