Burloak was a hub of activity yesterday as the Olympic Torch ran -not by- but literally through our club parking lot. An enthusiastic crowd turned up to cheer on silver Olympic medalist John Wood (1976) as he arrived to receive the flame from fellow Olympian, Adam vanKoeverden. (gold & bronze in 2004, silver in 2008)
Adam ran down the hill like the champion he is, announcing as he entered the parking lot, "Burloak! I'm home!" The mob ran with him as he picked up his boat and jogged the path (Larry Cain trail) around the club. At the top of the hill he handed off the flame to John who disappeared into the crowd running up the firehall hill with only the flame visible above the mob. Later that evening another Olympian paddling at Burloak, Al Thomson (Los Angeles, 1984), ran in Burlington (from Burlington City Hall, along Brant St. to Lakeshore Rd.) Today Brady Reardon, (Olympian, 2008) ran in Jordan, Ontario.
The entire weekend was a celebration of Burloak's rich Olympic history leaving everyone who experienced it with a sense of pride. It is amazing how a little flame like that can engage an entire country.
