The Canadian Press, POZNAN, Poland - Mark Oldershaw of Burlington, Ont., captured gold in the 5,000-metre canoe singles Sunday while Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois-Rivieres, Que., won silver to cap the second stop on the World Cup paddling circuit. Oldershaw added a silver in the C-1 1,000 while Olympic kayak medallist Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., took the bronze in the K-1 1,000.
Oldershaw raced to a time of 21 minutes 4.06 seconds in the 5,000 - a new event which will be added to next year's world championship program - for his first World Cup victory since 2007. Beauchesne-Sevigny was second in 21:07.94 while Sergiu Cracium of Romania finished third in 21:30.07.
"I was happy to have Gabriel with me because we've been training partners almost all year,'' said Oldershaw. "Everything went as planned. We got ahead together quickly and we were able to ride each other's wash and save energy.
"We had both been in races earlier in the day so that was important for us.''
Vadin Menkov of Belarus was the victor in the C-1 1,000 in 3:55.246. Oldershaw took second in 3:56.714 while Sebastian Brendel of Germany was third in 3:57.870. Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., was fourth in 3:59.590.
"It was nice to come back from a messy 500-metre race (on Saturday),'' said Oldershaw, who was eighth in Saturday's C-1 500. "My focus has been mainly on the 1,000 because it's early in the season and my speed isn't quite there yet. I got off to a great start and felt comfortable right up until the finish.''
Max Hoff of Germany won the K-1 1,000 in 3:29.854, with Anders Gustavsson of Sweden taking second in 3:31.802 and van Koeverden finishing third in 3:32.514, the Canadian's third World Cup medal this season.
